Hiway Hifi cares about the environment, which
is why we are doing our bit to help. Here's why:
- Electrical goods are the fastest growing waste
stream in the UK, growing by 5% each year
- In the UK the amount of electrical waste we
create in one year would fill the new Wembley 6 times!
- Each year in the UK we go through over 1.2
million tonnes of electrical waste. That is the equivalent of 150 thousand
double decker buses!
- 75% of waste electronics end up in landfill
sites
- In the lifetime of 1 UK citizen 3.3 tonnes
of waste electronics is created! (weeeman.org)
- Two million TV sets are discarded every year
- most end up in landfill sites (Recycle Now)
- "Over six million electrical items are
thrown away every year in the UK. It is estimated that over half of
them are still working or could easily be repaired." (ITDG, 2003)
- 15 million mobile phones are upgraded in the
UK each year, laid from end-to-end they would reach from John O'Groats
to Lands End! (www.sciencemuseum.org.uk).
This is a lot of electrical waste! So to reduce
the amount of electrical items going to landfill the government has introduced
some new regulations called: The Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment (WEEE) Regulations. To find out more about this please

here.
What Is Hiway Hifi Ltd. Doing?

Hiway Hifi Ltd. has joined the Distributor Take Back Scheme (DTS). Hiway
Hifi Ltd. has made a financial contribution to the DTS which will be used
to assist in the development of waste electrical and electronic equipment
(WEEE) collection facilities throughout the UK. This investment has been
used towards the development and upgrade of 'Designated Collection facilities'
(DCFs) throughout the UK. View
our WEEE compliance certificate. From July 1st 2007 you will
be able to return any old electrical item you have for recycling free
of charge to your local Designated Collection Facility (See below for
Details).
What Can I Recycle?

From now on all new electrical products that can be recycled will carry
the ‘crossed out wheelie bin’ to help you remember to recycle
them. For more information on recycling and how to minimise your environmental
impact click on the dedicated recycling site here www.recycle-more.co.uk
Where Can I Recycle?

Designated Collection Facilities will be nationwide and is likely that
your ‘local tip’ has been upgraded to provide this facility.
To find your nearest DCF simply click
here. The recycle-more.co.uk website allows you to enter your postcode
and you will then be directed to your nearest DCF. More DCFs will be added
over time so even if there is not one local to you now there soon will
be.
